What is Scribd, Inc.

Scribd, Inc. is an AI-powered knowledge company on a mission to advance human understanding. Founded in 2007 and led by CEO Tony Grimminck, it is a private company based in San Francisco.

It is the parent company to four distinct products: Scribd, Slideshare, Everand, and Fable. Each serves a different audience, a different purpose, and a different way of engaging with content.

That distinction is important, but often misunderstood. As Scribd, Inc. continues to evolve, understanding the difference matters – for users, partners, and anyone trying to understand what the company does.

How Scribd, Inc. got here

The company started with the launch of Scribd, a document library to upload and share written content in PDF form. This library expanded over time to include more content – ebooks, audiobooks, presentations, magazines, sheet music, and more.

By 2023, the company made a deliberate strategic decision to unbundle its products. Users looking for peer-reviewed research and those looking for their next romance audiobook have different needs. User experiences needed to be curated, streamlined and refined. So the company unbundled into three distinct products under Scribd, Inc.: Scribd, Slideshare, and Everand. In 2025, it acquired Fable, the leading social reading platform, adding a fourth.

Is Everand the same as Scribd?

No. Scribd does not have ebooks, audiobooks, or podcasts anymore; that is Everand. Before the 2023 unbundling, those content types were part of the original Scribd platform. They are no longer. When Scribd, Inc. separated its products, the books and audio went to Everand. The Scribd platform today is focused exclusively on documents and research. Scribd and Everand are separate platforms with separate subscriptions for their respective audiences.

The products explained

Scribd is an applied knowledge platform containing documents on every topic imaginable. It has over 300M+ pieces of content, from documents, research papers, legal filings, academic materials, and manuals, added by its community.

Slideshare is a vast collection of 25 million presentations, uploaded by subject matter experts around the globe. It is a resource for professionals and academics who want to find inspiration, showcase expertise, and build their own ideas.

Everand is a digital content subscription home to millions of ebooks, audiobooks and podcasts, including bestselling and iconic titles. It is the destination for modern readers who want to fit reading into their lifestyle – whether an audiobook on the go or a story before bed.

Fable is the leading social reading platform. It brings readers together through curated book clubs, personalized reading experiences, and community-driven discovery.

Together, these four products form one of the largest and most diverse collections of human-created content in the world. They are distinct, but all connected by the company’s mission to advance human understanding – whether through a peer-reviewed paper, a bestselling novel, a professional presentation, or a book club conversation.

How to subscribe

A subscription to Scribd or Slideshare is $11.99 per month and provides access to both products.

Everand offers tiered plans starting at $11.99 per month for one book, scaling up to five titles per month.

Fable includes free and paid options. Users can join free clubs, create their own clubs, and access basic features. Fable Plus adds enhanced tools and deeper reading insights.

Scribd, Inc. is the parent. The products are the platforms.

When you read a document on Scribd, listen to an audiobook on Everand, browse presentations on Slideshare, or join a book club on Fable – you are using a Scribd, Inc. product.

The products are separate. The mission is shared.
